Medicare’s hospice benefit is available to patients whose physicians certify their estimated life expectancy is six months or less if
the illness runs its normal course. Since Medicare recognizes that terminal illnesses do not have entirely predictable courses, the
benefit is available for longer time periods with the re-certification by the physician.
